Children’s Literature Reviews: The Glove Balloon

Day 9

As a father, I get to read a lot of different books to my son. This experience is surprisingly more rewarding than pre-parent Tim would have guessed. (Apparently it’s also good for the kid. Learning or something. Whatevs.) But the downside is that you have to read a lot of books over and over. When you do that, the flaws really start to jump out at you. Over the next few weeks, I’m going to examine some of these books. Warning: spoilers! (As in you’re going to see the whole book). Today we’re looking at the Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club House mini-book, The Glove Balloon.

Dog Tired

September 8th, 2013 . by Tim Babb (TANcast's #1 Host/Editor Fan)

30 Days and 30 Blogs
Day 8
I just finished the dishes, making coffee, helping my wife with two projects for school, and editing the latest TANcast that we recorded this morning before I worked an 8 hour day.

What I’m saying is…I’m tired. I don’t have any wit for you people tonight…so here’s a picture of a dog at my office.

That’s cute right? It look’s like he googled squirrels and fire hydrants. Hilarious. Now leave me alone until tomorrow.

WTF, Whovians?

Day 7

So I’ve been plugging along at Doctor Who episodes when I can. (I don’t know where all my free time went..I think my kid is hiding it somewhere). So far, it’s been pretty enjoyable. Nothing on the level of Star Trek, but enjoyable. Then a few minutes ago I finished watching the episode entitled “Father’s Day.”

Don’t let the Syfy Channel-looking special effects fool you…

F*** you! Yes f*** all you Doctor Who fans for not warning me this was coming. You all knew this episode was hanging there waiting for me when you said, “Start with the 9th Doctor.” Daleck my balls*! So far this show has been light fluffy stuff like living plastic mannequins and farting aliens wearing human disguises. All the while the Doctor mugs and jokes his way through one wacky disaster after another. That’s fun enough. Who wouldn’t enjoy some wacky time traveling antics? Read the rest of this entry »

DisneyLAND or Disney WORLD?

September 6th, 2013 . by Tim Babb (TANcast's #1 Host/Editor Fan)

30 Days and 30 Blogs
Day 6

So I know a fair amount of Disney fans read this blog semi-regularly. I have an opinion question for you…

Which do you prefer, Disneyland or Walt Disney World…and WHY?

I”m not sure where I stand yet. I’ve visited Disneyland probably a thousand times by now and I’ve only been to Disney World once. Maybe I’m not the most impartial judge.

But what do you think? Which one’s better? Let me know in the comments (please)

Someone REALLY Likes Skyfall

September 5th, 2013 . by Tim Babb (TANcast's #1 Host/Editor Fan)

30 Days and 30 Blogs
Day 5

So at my “day job,” they have a cafeteria where we can get some grub. All sorts of stuff, from pizza to burgers to sushi. It’s a bit pricey, but still pretty sweet. That’s not the point if this blog, however.

I go there around the same time every day (a little after 1pm, if you need to know the specifics). And normally I have my earbuds in, listening to some podcast or other…but occasionally, the music they play in there makes it through. And lately I’ve noticed how often that music is Adele’s song, “Skyfall.” In fact, it happened yesterday and I pointed it out to a co-worker who happened to be standing next to me. THen it happened today and the co-worker was on the other side of the cafeteria. SO I ran over to him and said, “Listen! Skyfall! AGAIN!”

He looked at me as though I was a freak (can’t blame him). But now I want to know why. What is the point of playing that song at the same time every day? Is it a coincidence? Is it part of a pre-set music mix that plays the same songs at the same time every day and Skyfall is the only one I recognize? (I don’t listen to the radio anymore) Or maybe someone has just decided the 1:00pm hour is the perfect time to salute James Bond?

Well THAT’S absurd. We all know the perfect time to salute James bond is 10:07.

“Finally We’re Getting Some More Terpenes & Phytosterols”

September 4th, 2013 . by Tim Babb (TANcast's #1 Host/Editor Fan)

30 Days and 30 Blogs Part 3
Day 4

I think we can all agree that it seems like people (Americans specifically) are getting dumber every day. Even if we’re not, it feels like corporations treat us like we are. Our media is dumbed down, our products have all sorts of safety warnings and features to stop us from hurting ourselves…clearly corporate America thinks we’re morons. Or so I thought, until I was at the grocery store the other day and I saw this:

So cucumbers are a good source of “terpenes & phytosterols,” huh? Great. WTF is terpenes & phytosterols? Does anyone walking through this supermarket know what those two words mean? This isn’t some high-end, Whole Foods type obnoxious liberal hang out…this is a regular Safeway. You can buy Cheez Whiz and pork rinds only a few isles over. Those words could mean “poison” and “otter farts” and 99.9% of the people wouldn’t know it. I don’t know what those words mean even now. (I know I could look them up and find out what they mean…but now I’m choosing to remain ignorant on principle.)

Yet they’re being touted proudly as though everyone has a working knowledge of these two obscure words and is in fact SEEKING those two things out. They act like they’re answering our silent prayers.

“Oh Lord, I need more terpenes & phytosterols, but I know not where to find them. Where can I…hold on…what’s this?! Cucumbers are a good source of terpenes & phytosterols?! Halleluiah!!! My worries are over!”

FYI-The title of this blog is in reference to a Jerry Seinfeld bit that I KNOW I’m coming dangerously close to ripping off. It’s from his CD, “I’m Telling You For The Last Time.” I was going to link to the bit, but I can’t find a recording of the CD on-line…only the video version where he doesn’t do that part of the joke.

He says, “They know we don’t know. They make up words all the time like ‘Now with an extra drop of Retsyn!’

Like we’re all going “FINALLY WE’RE GETTING SOME MORE RETSYN!!!”

Anyway, here’s the bit that leads up to that line. If you’re smart, the album is on Amazon and iTunes.

2013 has been a banner year for upsetting fan boys at the box office. EVen though “geek culture” has hit the mainstream, not all the geeks are happy about it. I thought I’d look at some of the major fan boy nerd rages at the movies this year and see what side I’m on. Fair warning…spoiler alerts to come. Read the rest of this entry »

A Thank You Letter to Zack Snyder

September 2nd, 2013 . by Tim Babb (TANcast's #1 Host/Editor Fan)

30 Days and 30 Blogs Part 3
Day 2

So after almost a year of me complaining about the movie Man of Steel, I feel the need to write a thank you letter to Zack Snyder.

Is it because I saw Man of Steel and the final product completely turned me around like Star Trek (2009) and Casino Royale? Nope. I keep going back and forth about whether the movie was even better than Superman Returns. It was a decent movie but it couldn’t decide if it wanted to be as “serious” as the Dark Knight or as “fun” as Iron Man…so it was really neither. (The first two Spider-Man movies struck that ballance much better, in my opinion.)

The reason I’m writing a thank you note to Zack Snyder, is that his misguided attempt at a Superman movie has really turned up the intensity on my love for the Christopher Reeve movies as well as the character in general. Read the rest of this entry »

Day 1
That’s right. I’m doing this again. I’ll be blogging every day in the month of September. I have a lot more going on then the last few times I’ve tried this, so we’ll see how it works out.

Hopefully, you’ll see 30 uninterpreted days of mediocre commentary from one of your 3 favorite TANcast personalities.

And the good news is, since Man of Steel has already come and gone, it probably wont be a buncj of blogs whining about the lack of John Williams score in Man of Steel.

…probably. No guarantees, though.
