The New SModcast?
March 13th, 2010 . by Tim Babb (TANcast's #1 Host/Editor Fan)Tim Babb’s March Blog Madness: Day 13
We just finished recording TANcast 91 and this was something we didn’t get to until the mics were off. SModcast is now more than just one podcast, it’s a whole “podcast network.” With the addition of two new podcasts. One of them is “Tell ‘Em Steve Dave.” I put forth that this podcast is as good as SModcast once was.
Tell ‘Em Steve Dave is a podcast featuring Brian Johnson and Walt Flanagan, tow friends of Kevin Smith who have been recurring guests on SModcast. Walt, in particular has been there for two of the funniest SModcsat moments. And now they have a podcast where they do what Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier used to do.
You see before SModcast started being all about how great weed is and the wonders of Wayne Gretzky, it used to just be two guys telling stories. While there are still glimmers of that showing through on SModcast, it feels much different these days. Especially since it seems like Scott Mosier has been absent a lot lately. But based on the first few episodes of Tell ‘Em Steve Dave, it seems like this is a podcast that brings the random humor and comradery that inspired TANcast back.
So I have to say, I’m looking more forward to Tell ‘Em Steve Dave than the next SModcast.

I’ll have to give that one a listen. Walt and Brian have always been funny on the earlier episodes of SModcast, and after Kevin turned into a depressing advocate of marijuana, I think he lost a lot of his focus.

I’m too lazy to look it up. What’s the other new podcast?

I’ve only listened to the TESD that Kevin Smith was on, but it seems pretty good. Up until FattyGate happened, I think that Mosier had been back for a fair while, but I may have missed a few in-betweeners. I agree with what Tim says about SModcast being best with Scott – guests are nice, but it doesn’t feel quite right when it becomes a few months of “Kev and friends” – even though I like a lot of those guests. I think that Kevin is actually better when he’s doing it with Mosier too – I think that there’s a touch of “interviewyness” to the other eps in that the other person seems to be there to give information to KS for him to run with.
Geoff, I think that the other podcast that Tim’s referring to is a Malcolm Ingram one, “Mo & Glo(ria)”. There was a Jay Mewes one, but that’s gone pretty silent, I think.

Oh stop the weed smoker bashing. I’m sure nobody would have a problem if Smith had become a heavy drinker and they talked about how awesome it is to be drunk (in fact I think TANcast has done that before). To say that the show has become about pot isn’t really true. Sure he mentions it in almost every show, but it’s never the focus of the show.
That being said, the show still has great moments but not as many as it used to. Tried listening to “Tell ’em Steve-Dave” and it’s ok, not great, ok. Maybe they will improve.

Ever since Kevin has made a effort to spend every day as wake and bake the show has taken a complete crap. There has been some completely awesome episodes (his mom getting high), but for the most part the show is taking. They need to get back to to origin story of smodcast. Back when they talked about mosier’s landscaping and traveling, and Kevin would talk about his life stories. I know he only has so many stories but it is still good to hear.

Tell Em Steve Dave is good BTW. But it doesn’t have the re listen quality of Tancast which I usually loop about 3 times and re-listen to on occasion.

Tell Em Steve Dave is very good, Walt was always my favorite guest on SModcast so to have him every week is great for me. His laugh is epic which may annoy some people but I find it very enjoyable. Lets just hope they can find there center and keep the momentum going.

I think Tell Em Steve Dave is pretty good and I agree Smod is not as solidly funny as it used to be but there are very funny moments.
I think one of my favorite smods is when kevin is telling about how one dog was in a cage and the other dog would fuck the side of the cage and cum all over the other dog.

Does this mean that you won’t be buying a FleshLight, Tim?

I have to check this out. Walt is my favorite guest on Smod too. I haven’t been listening lately since Kev has been mopey and stoned. I miss the old Smod
