Boldly Gone

August 4th, 2009 . by Tim Babb (TANcast's #1 Host/Editor Fan)

It was a year ago today that I hopped in my crappy little car, cracked up the music of Jerry Goldsmith, and headed to a doomed land of paradise for the final time. Today is the one year anniversary of my final trip to Star Trek: The Experience.

It was hard to take this picture with tears in my eyes

I talked about my trip (and was mocked for it) on TANcast Episode 11 and there is some video of it on an episode of Tim Babb’s Kingdom Comedy called “Save Star Trek-The Experience”.

But today as I discovered the ride ticket from that faithful day it made me nostalgic..and also pissed off! There was talk of the Experience re-opening in Downtown Las Vegas in time for the new movie…obviously that has come and gone. Then it was supposed re-open “in phases” with the public first being allowed in sometime in 2010. However, folks in Vegas report that there is no work being done on it! C’mon people! Star Trek was the 5th highest grossing movie this year! The Vegas Star Trek Convention begins in 2 days! What are you waiting for? It only took one movie to bring Spock back to life…and that was a whole dead person. This is just moving some sets across town!

Some of us are eager to return to the Enterprise and go on one more mission with Geordi LaForge to save Captain Picard’s ancestor (which might be me….shhhh don’t tell) Some of us are excited about another encounter with the Borg and the Voyager crew…ok…truth be told, there is not much exciting about the Voyager crew.

But in a year where Star Trek has returned to the limelight in a big, bad way, NOT capitalizing on this opportunity is like not raising the shields upon failure of communication…and I think we know how THAT turned out (C’mon Kirk, General Order 12 is there for a REASON).

“This is your fault…and I know that’s a toupee! Kiss my logical ass!”

But now what are we supposed to do? Sure can go to this site and check out the virtual 360 tour of some of the sets but it’s not the same! It’s like the Hilton revoked our passport to Geektown and no one is willing to give it back!

I’ve had a taste of the good stuff…you can’t expect me to settle for going to a convention and listening to Walter Koenig talk bout how he always knew the show would be a huge hit. I’ve walked the hallowed halls of the Enterprise D! I’ve been face to face with Commander Riker on the bridge’s view screen! Now you want me to go back to life like it all never happened! No! I say! Fuck you! I know it ‘s a rough economy, but someone somewhere has the money to make this happen and right now you are at a point to get the best return on your investment! So stop being a p’tak and get your asses in gear! Until they have actual transports to the planet Risa, this is the best chance on Earth for some solid Trek entertainment!

I may have mentioned this before, but my brother and I used to mutter “gollum, gollum” whenever Kathryn Janeway started talking.

Best part of Voyager? Tuvok Shakur.
