Having “your president will fix this” on your TikTok is truly next-level 1984 shit. I’ve been a skeptic and critic of social media from day one and see where it got us now. Democracy is threatened by fascist oligarchy and a president first demonizes then weaponizes one of its tool in a typical opportunistic mood-swing. We need regulation of social media now.

I’m completely with Andy on his points on social media. The problem is that social media has become an alternative to scientific discourse. Social media users operate under the assumption that if something can be said and other people think and believe it too then it must be true. In and of itself this is not an issue (free speech). The problem is that mere gossip and hearsay and a bunch of other problematic human behaviours like bullying have become so paramount and so widespread that one accepts them as fact without alternative. All of this coupled with the fact that the people who profit from it do not care if they continue to radicalize and divide people, as long as it fills their pocket. There is a good segment of the population for whom it is not beneficial to get the opportunity to say whatever they want to say because they are not aware of the systemic issue with social media platforms. For the predators who run them, it is not even an alternative model to democracy, it is a mere attempt at tyranny.
