From the sound of the Lost discussion I think you guys would enjoy talking about J.J. Abrams’ mystery boxes approach to filmmaking. I’m sure you’ve heard of it before but the idea is that you can have a million mysteries to get the audience invested (Snoke, Luke’s lightsaber, the First Order’s rise to power in TFA) without ever needing to give a crap about the payoff. To me J.J. is a one-trick hack writer/director. I’m curious what your thoughts are because he employs this tactic constantly including Lost.
