One thing to remember about the weirdness of the Schroedinger’s cat situation is that it was *designed* to sound nonsensical. The “something has to be alive or dead” idea that Tom and Noah were saying was being used to argue against the idea that physical properties can be “undecided” until observed. Schroedinger didn’t like the “everything’s out there in both states until we check” idea and (from his perspective) wanted to show everyone how dumb it was by saying “so if we link those undecided physical properties to something very definite like the death of a cat (via a detector and a flask of poison) everyone will see how stupid this is”. He was stating it as a paradox (the idea that an atom can be in two states versus the idea that a cat can’t) but specifically as one which he hoped would lead people to decide that the resolution of the issue must be that the idea that the properties of atoms (and thus other properties) can be in two states until measured must be wrong.

More high-level physics chat next time?

I wished we’d remembered to mention this comment on the show I’m editing now
