High 5: Movies I’m Looking Forward to MORE Than Man of Steel
March 12th, 2013 . by Tim Babb (TANcast's #1 Host/Editor Fan)I am a huge Superman fan. (I’m sure this comes as no shock to most of you) I have been for as long as I can remember. I came by it naturally too. My son is a Superman fan because he sees daddy in Superman gear all the time…my dad never read comic books and couldn’t give two craps about Superman. I don’t think my mom is a big Superman fan, I’m pretty sure she could take him or leave him. So I must have come to it on my own. And he has been my favorite superhero all my life. I liked Batman, Spider-Man, the Hulk, and Wonder Woman (oh Wonder Woman…mmmmm)…but I never forgot who was top dog. Superman was always #1 in my heart.
So you’d think I’d be over the moon that a new, big budget Superman movie is coming out this year. But I’m not. I just can’t shake the feeling that Zach Snyder is gonna #$%@ it up! Maybe I’m wrong. I had similar feelings going into Casino Royal (I was/am a huge Pierce Brosnan fan) and JJ Abrams’ Star Trek (I wanted the Next Generation to get a better final movie than Nemesis…bleach). But those movies won me over in spite of my grumpy attitude. Will Man of Steel? We’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, here’s my High 5 list of movies that this dyed-in-the-wool Superman fan is looking forward to MORE than Man of Steel.
Star Trek Into Darkness
One of the movies I was dreading the most in 2009 has spawned a sequel that I’m most looking forward to in 2013! I liked the 2009 Star Trek a lot more than I thought I would. But this is a new animal. This isn’t the new cast trying to find their roles. This is the new cast having an adventure in their own world on their own terms. I’m looking forward to seeing what JJ and crew have in store. I’ve seen enough of the trailers to be very excited. Also…I don’t want to see any more. I kind of want to unplug the internet between now and May. Hey Paramount, I already want to see it! Don’t show me any more clips of the movie!
Iron Man 3
Before 2008, Iron Man wasn’t even on my radar as a hero. I knew he existed…I think I knew his alter ego had a problem with alcohol…I think that’s about it. Robert Downey Jr. made this a character a player with the big boys. This is another one where I feel I’ve seen too much already. I broke down and watched the new trailer (I’m weak). This looks like it’s going to be pretty epic. Add to that the real world knowledge that they’re building towards an Avengers 2…I’m in! Shut up and take my money!
Hangover Part III
I have to admit, when I heard they were doing a third one, I rolled my eyes. I didn’t see the second one because it looked like the same move again but in Singapore and without Heather Graham. So I imagined they had to be nuts to do this a third time. But then I saw the trailer. Hot damn! They’re back in Vegas, the plot sounds totally different…and did I see Heather Graham at 1:14?! Hot damn. I’m in! May is gonna be a busy month for my baby sitter.
Jack Ryan
Chris Pine takes on another role made popular by an iconic actor(s). This time he’s stepping into the shoes previosly filled by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, and Ben Affleck. I’ve liked every Jack Ryan movie I’ve seen so far.I’m excited to see the character again. Kenneth Branagh is directing and playing the villain. There’s no trailer for this…there’s not even a poster (I made the one above from a set photo and some text) but I’m pretty excited for this movie.
Superman: The Movie
Yeah, I said it! I’m more excited to watch a 35 year old movie on DVD (not even BluRay…DVD, bitches) than to see Man of Steel. No it’s not a perfect movie. (The whole Lois Lane inner monologue flying poem…um what?) and the action is very tame by today’s standards. But this movie takes us from Krypton to Smallville to Metropolis and introduced the world at large to the Last Son of Krypton. This movie gave birth to the modern super hero genre. And most importantly this movie has ONE OF THE GREATEST FILM SCORES OF ALL TIME! DO YOU HEAR ME ZACK SNYDER, YOU PIECE OF CRAP?!!

Good list, except for Hangover. Just… Ugh. Replace that with Monsters University and I’m all in.

You know, Tim, you don’t have to watch those online trailers.

You know, I don’t think I’ve ever noticed Jor-El in the background of the Superman poster before….
