Sugar vs. The Government…Who Do You Root For?
March 11th, 2013 . by Tim Babb (TANcast's #1 Host/Editor Fan)So today in New York, a judge struck down the law banning sugary drinks from being larger than 16 ounces.
A friend of a friend had this to say about it on Facebook.
It is our bodies. If we want to load it with sugar then so be it. They are just trying to find more and more ways to control people. If they are going to take away sugar drinks then they need to take away everything fried and greasy too.
I’m divided on this. Part of me agrees with this idea. Part of freedom is the freedom to make bad choices. I remember hearing that New York was also going to ban 2 liter deliveries with pizzas. Even though I don’t live in New York, that really bummed me out. Wait, not only do I not live in New York but I almost NEVER get a 2 liter of soda delivered with pizza! Just the idea that the government is telling me I can’t…it bothers me!
On the other hand, I know that it goes beyond personal freedom. Sugary drinks (and bad eating choices in general) lead to a whole host of health problems. Those health problems are part of the reason health care is so expensive in this country. And I know it’s hard to give these things up on your own. I went without soda for about eight or nine months and it was very difficult. I am currently trying to ration my fast food intake this year and it is amazingly hard. Not only is the internal temptation there, but there are constant advertisements in your face. Burger King is running a deal where you can get ANY 2 sandwiches for $5! Are you kidding me, Burger King? Combining my two favorite things: Burger King and saving money! Where was this last year?! Now I just have to let this deal pass me by and it’s killing me.
So I don’t know if we can legislate ourselves healthier…but SOMETHING needs to be done.
…and now I’m hungry!!!
*Editor’s note: Tim went to Cold Stone to have ice cream shortly after this was written…but he DIDN’T have any soda for the last 2 days and had veggie burgers for dinner that night. So…think what you will.
