I can’t recall how long ago it was but I think I said I might do a blog post about what apps I love on my iPhone for Jess. So here it is, better late than never right?

Google Mobile:
I have started using the Google Mobile app a lot more these days. It used to have no background support, so if you went to some other app or your home screen and went back, it would reset back to the search field, instead of keeping the website you clicked on up.They have since fixed that and I think it is a pretty useful app. Free App.

Evernote:
For those who don’t know, Evernote allows you to capture information and store it in the cloud. You can do audio, picture and text notes and it has a browser plugin that will allow you clip websites. I use it to capture all sorts of info like recipes, product information and I even uploaded pictures for my home owner’s insurance. I rarely ever make notes via the iPhone app but I do look up stuff quite regularly. Another similar service is called Springpad, it can do things like look up move times and product info for things that you clip or enter. It seems very cool but since I already have so much data in Evernote, that I have trouble switching. Free app but you can pay to get more storage for your notes.

1Password:
This is a paid app for your computer but I use it all the time. It basically is a password manager but it makes it easier to use more secure passwords, instead of passwords I can recall. Since all you really need to remember is your master password. Another feature I love is that you can store your password database within Dropbox. So if I make a change on my iPhone or on my home computer, it will synch to both. iPhone App is paid and the computer software costs as well.

Runkeeper:
Those who have friended me on Facebook and haven’t blocked my Runkeeper updates, know how much I use this app. At this point I would work out either way but I am nerdy and I like seeing the data and my improvements over time. For those that don’t know this app can track your exercise via GPS and give you stats and you can manually enter work outs as well, such as a stationary bike or treadmill. They also have a website interface. Free App.

Loseit:
This app tracks your calories/nutrition and can tell you how many calories you can have if you want to lose weight. I don’t use this app as much anymore but I feel it really helped me lose a lot of my weight. Before I had no idea how many calories I was eating every day, so it was a bit of an eye opener. That being said it can get tedious tracking all your calories but I would say use it for a few months, to at least have a better idea of how many calories are in the foods you eat. Has a website interface. Free App.

Appshopper:
This is an iPhone app tracking app. It can tell you which apps have changed price, gone free, have an update. I mostly use it to notify me of price drops on apps I want but don’t want to pay the original price for. Free App.

Yelp:
I love this app, I know it can track all sorts of businesses but I mostly use it to find new food places to try. I like using it when trying to find a new place to try nearby. Free App.

That is just a small sampling of the apps I used. I have quite a few game apps loaded but they are mostly the game apps you have heard about like Words with Friends, Bejeweled 2, Death Rally, World of Goo and Angry Birds.

I have a lot of other apps I find useful for me but sure they are for everyone such as Week Calendar, Delivery Status, Flixster and TV Forecast.

Earl Grey Cookies

As Promised, here is the vegan version of the Earl Grey Cookies. Pretty sure the only change was to switch out the butter for Smart Balance.

Earl Grey Tea Cookies

1 cup all purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup powdered sugar
1 tablespoon Earl Grey tea leaves (about 3 bags of tea leaves)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup vegan Smart Balance

Water (add 1 teaspoon at a time)

In a food processor pulse together the flour, sugar, powdered sugar, tea leaves and salt. Add vanilla and Smart Balance and pulse until dough looks like gravel. Continue pulsing dough adding 1 teaspoon of water at a time until dough forms a ball.

Wrap dough in plastic wrap and chill in the freezer for 30 minutes.

Roll out dough on a floured surface, dough should be between ¼ and ? inches thick. Use small cookie cutters and place on a baking sheet covered in parchment paper.

Preheat oven to 375°F. Bake for 12 minutes or until the edges just start to turn brown.

A letter from the N in TANcast

I’ve been sitting on this for a little while, not sure how I wanted to say it. Its been fun and strange and amazing, but my wife and I have decided that its time to say goodbye to TANcast and focus 100% on our family.

I told Tim and Andy last week, and we’ve been talking about “What Happens Next” since then. They both agreed I should be the one to break the news.

The site won’t move and the show won’t change it’s name. I will still be the “N in TANcast” through TANcast 100 (triple-digits!). I will probably do a guest shot every once in a while after that, but from TANcast 101 on it will be Tim and Andy’s show. Andy said he won’t be turning off my access to the site or to email, so I may log in and post something when I have time and something to say.

They are already talking to a few different people about being regular guest hosts and I’m looking forward to listening to it every week.

I’m a little sad, but like the breakup of the TAN House, it had to happen some time.

Just a quick note to let you know I am still around. I am moved into our new house and we(mostly my wife) have been making it into a home. Hence no proper Tancast for the last two weeks. I also am on a Jury until the end of August and still doing work for my job. So, it has been a busy last couple of weeks for me.

Bus Stop FAIL!

There is a Park and Ride on my way to work that I have started to use to save money, be green etc. For those that don’t know, a Park and Ride is a parking lot that is located along a major bus route usually. I found out today that they are expanding the parking lot and it was supposed to open today. The plan was that they expand the Park and Ride lot and then move the bus stop from the road next to the lot, to inside the parking lot. Making it nice and convenient for passangers. There was just one snag in their master plan. The buses don’t fit into the parking lot. At least that is what I heard a passanger say, I didn’t fact check.

If this is true, that is such a massive. It is not like one guy fucked up, a whole group of people fucked up. Someone had to draw up the plans, someone had to sign off on the plans, the plans had to be presented and approve I am sure, someone who builds things on a regular basis had to look at them at start the building process. I am not sure how bad it is, maybe the diffrence of one inch made it impossible for the buses to get through but damn, I am sure this is costing someone a lot of money.

I did a quick google search and the parking lot addition cost 8.3 million.

Hi all of you out there in Tancast land.

Just letting you know we are all still alive.

I have been working and house hunting, no news yet on any of the places we put offers on but we are going out again tomorrow to check out some more places. If you are looking to buy, I love the website Redfin. I can’t speak for their agents but I love the site for finding properties to look at. I actually just did a focus group for them, they want to make an iPhone app.

This is going to be a good summer I feel. Hopefully a new house, iPhone 3.0 comes out, and I am sure an iPhone and maybe something else cool from Apple.

Anyone going to see Star Trek this weekend? I know I am and I hope it is as good as all the hype.

Not much else to say for now. Hope you all are well and we will be recording a Tancast this week. Tell your mom I love her, remember it is mothers day this weekend if you live in the states.

Give Boxee a spin

In case you care and use a Mac or Linux, Boxee has opened up its Alpha. So now anyone can download the software and try it. I personally haven’t used it that much but the main reason for that is I watch most things on the computer connected to my tv and it is running Vista. I have checked out XBMC and Plex (Mac Only) as well. So far I like Boxee the best because you can browse sites like Hulu, Comedy Central and Apple Trailers out of the box. I know you can do at least some of that stuff with XBMC and Plex but it seems you have to use scripts and plug ins and it was too much of a hassle for me. To be fair though I haven’t used any of the products that much. I will try and give them all a spin and give a more detailed review.

In other geek news. I am going to try and load Windows 7 on my Mac and run it in Parallels or Boot Camp, whichever works. I did a quick Google search and saw some people got it to work but I haven’t researched the best way to do it.

Nothing else to report for now.

I was at work and I needed to print out some labels for filing purposes. I turn on the shared label maker and someone had been printing stuff before me. When the label maker powered on, all i could see was “ing Analy.” I was a little taken aback, like who is printing “Analy” labels and what are they doing with them?

Then I started deleting characters and saw the rest of the word “Analysis.”

I went to Ikea with my lovely wife last night to pick up a few things and on our way home, I had to get some gas. So as I get out of my car, wallet and some money in my hand. When this homeless guy, who was missing more then a few teeth and the teeth he had left looked like they were trying to escape his mouth, comes up to me and asks for gas money. I look over and his car is a red BMW that looked in good shape. I debated for a moment and decided to give him a few dollars and he thanks me and walks away. Then his woman gets out of the car, walks over and starts reading me a blessing from her bible and she looked like she gave up on brushing a long time ago as well.

My question is how the heck do you not have all your teeth, can’t afford gas but have a BMW. I have a steady job, most my teeth and I am not rolling in a BMW. I wondered if they are selling their teeth on the black market? How much money can you save if you stop brushing your teeth?

So I take the bus to work most of the time. Not so much because I care about being green (although I try to be when I can) but because gas is high and bridge toll is high. So it is much cheaper for me to ride the bus to work. Since I ride the same bus so much, you see the same people over and over and let me tell you about this fat black lady. I have never really liked her, because often after people had lined up for the bus in the order they got to the stop, she would waddle up and cut to the front of the line with some people she knew. Not that is is a huge deal but it seems kind of rude and not very considerate to others.

Well know I have a new reason to dislike her. I like to sit in the back of the bus because on the bus that I ride there is a sit that is over the wheel that has more leg room then the other seats and I don’t feel as cramped in those seats. The fat black lady (or FBL) likes to sit in the row of seats right in front of where I sit. She also likes to sit in the aisle seat and let her fat arm hang into the aisle. Now the bus aisles are not that wide and her arm probably takes up 25-30 percent of the aisle. I should also mention that I get off the bus before her and everyday I have to squeeze past that lump of arm fat.

I could sit in front of her, sure, but I think you should try to keep your body parts and body fat in you little area. I know some people can’t help it but she has both seats to herself, she could scoot over. How would it be if I just hung my balls over the arm rest. No one wants to walk past that. Well elbow skin looks like ball skin, so it is almost the same thing.
