High 5 Superhero Movies

October 15th, 2014 . by Tim Babb (TANcast's #1 Host/Editor Fan)

I was recently watching a Watchmojo video where they ranked the top 10 DC Comic Book movies. I decided their list was kinda crap so I decided to make my own list. But I’m not limiting myself to DC, and I’m stopping at 5 movies. Other than that, their exactly the same. (If you read yesterday’s blog, you know you shouldn’t expect to see Man of Steel on this list)

Honorable Mentions:
Apologies to Guardians of the Galaxy, X2: X-Men United, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Iron Man 3, and the Incredibles…we ran out of time.

Batman (1989)

If you weren’t around in the summer of 1989, it is impossible to comprehend what an event this movie was. It was the biggest thing ever. The hype for this flick was out of control. But man, did it deliver. Keaton and Nicholson are amazing. They truly embraced the absurdity of this movie. There’s actually not a ton of “action” in this movie, but it’s a visually fascinating piece of work that set the stage for much of what has come in the last few years.

Iron Man

I was amazed at how much I loved this movie. I wasn’t a big Iron Man fan. I didn’t really have strong feelings about Robert Downey Jr. Yet somehow, when those two things combined, they created an explosion of awesome. Great script, great visuals, and a lot of fun humor. This was the perfect way to kick off the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Avengers

This was tough. I almost put the ultimate superhero team-up at #2. As I said on our High 5 sequels episode, this movie is just so re-watchable. It has so many of the things we wanted to see. We get to see the heroes fight each other. We get to see Hulk going nuts on some bad guys. Robert Downey Jr. brings in all that charisma. This movie has action, jokes, heart…a tough one to beat.

Superman: The Movie/Superman II

Yes I know they’re two movies, but I can’t decide which one is better. I just lump them both together as an almost unbeatable superhero movie experience. Brando’s Jor-El, Hackman’s Luthor, Terrance Stamp as Zod…and of course Reeve as the definitive Superman. These two flicks made me the life long fan of Superman I am today. If the recent superhero movies owe Batman ’89 a debt, then Batman ’89 owes a debt to Superman.

The Dark Knight

As big a Superman fan as I am, I can’t deny that this movie is fantastic. I remember sitting in the theater thinking, “This movie is really long…but I really hope it’s not over yet. I want MORE!!!”

I don’t know how much the hype around Heath Ledger influenced my opinion, but I will tell you I was WRAPPED UP in this story as it unfolded. While it’s not quite as re-watchable as Avengers, I could watch the Joker/Batman interrogation scene on a loop for hours. Phenomenal stuff.

What did I miss? Let me know in the comments.
