I don’t know if you’ve heard, but the Star Trek Into Darkness BluRay is out. Which I was super excited for because I really liked the movie and I couldn’t wait to see all the special features.
Well guess what? You only get some of the features if you buy it at Best Buy. You only get OTHER features if you buy your BluRay at Target. Oh wait, you wanted the commentary? Sorry, Trek Chump, that’s only available on iTunes.
What are you morons doing?! The Trek fans already hate your movie. They voted it worst of all the Trek movies at this year’s Vegas Star Trek convention. (Yes…worse than part 5). You don’t give them more reasons not to buy it. Wasn’t 2009’s Star Trek the most pirated movie of that year? What do you think is going to happen now?
I am seriously considering not getting the BluRay now. (By that I mean, not asking for it for Christmas). I’ll stick with Iron Man 3, they’re touting all their features on their commercials. And I bet I only have to buy one package to get them all. I bet Man of Steel isn’t even dumb enough to split them up like that.
Star Trek, you and me are on shaky ground. Live long and go **** yourself.

That’s almost as insane as the whole “Let’s be dicks to every fan who shells out way too much money for the Blu-Ray!” thing Tim was talking about.

I bought the Target version. I have a friend who buys every version of every movie and album he wants, which is increasingly common. He bought five versions of the recent anniversary release of the Nirvana album “In Utero.” Two are identical except that one came with stickers. (I don’t know how his wife puts up with this.) Anyway, back to Trek; the Target version has a whole disc of extras, which is why my collector friend said I should get that one. (It also has a pretty cover!) I already filed the movie away without watching any of the features.

Wait, I’m still thinking about this, and getting more pissed off. I once drove across town to the only Wal-Mart, because that was the only store that carried the latest KISS CD. I’m sure these exclusive deals with retailers must give the distributor a higher cut, but it seems illogical that it would help sales. I would think that inaccessibility and customer confusion would hinder sales. Maybe I’m wrong though, since we keep seeing more of these “exclusives.” Maybe there are enough people like my friend, who buys all of the versions, or enough people who don’t care and just buy the version at whatever store they’re at?

I haven’t actually seen all the ST movies with the original cast, but I thought “Generations” was supposed to be the worst.

Star Trek V is generally considered the worst. It had a tiny budget and Shatner wrote and directed it.
I believe Insurrection is usually considered the next worst with Generations and Nemesis fighting over the next two spots. You can Usually slap the Motion(less) Picture on next. After that there’s no real consensus until you get to the top where it seems like everyone but me puts Wrath of Khan (I thought Undiscovered Country was the best Trek movie of all time)

So much for getting it all on Blu-Ray. We still get
mostall of our stuff on DVD so far – though we have a BR player – and thus have ads for Blu-Ray on lots of stuff. On a DVD bought just this week, they’re still spruiking how wonderful BR is by saying how packed with content they are – but then splitting the content three ways?And of course, you can bet that during the discussion to do this there were people saying “well look, some Trekkies out there will buy all three to get all the bonus content”.
I wonder what content is on the DVD in other markets? As I still haven’t seen ST:ID, I might soon find out.
