Marty going back in time to prevent an event would make it so Marty wouldn't go back in time to prevent the event because the event never occurred, so he would have no knowledge he needs to prevent the event, so the event would occur, causing him to go back in time to prevent the event leading to a never ending circle of FAIL.... that about sum it up, Tim? This is EXACTLY why I don't watch time travel movies. Although I did enjoy the BTTF movies when I was young enough not to have that very line of thought. Especially because they all assume a single-timeline conception of time. If a writer instead worked with the idea that there are an infinite number of sovereign timelines, then they might be able to write a logically consistent story. But then the story would be kind of boring, since technically the time traveler is never altering history, just jumping from one timeline to another. Also, I have never seen the Back to the Future sequels, and I've really only watched the first one once. I did not care for it.
